A former University of Virginia lacrosse player who beat his ex-girlfriend to death in an apparent drunken rage has been sentenced to 23 years in prison. George W. Huguely V was convicted in February for the murder of Yeardley Love, also a university student.
The jury had recommended a 26-year sentence for Huguely.
Love, a member of the University of Virginia's women's lacrosse team, was found face down on a bloody pillow in her bed in her Charlottesville apartment on May 3, 2010. Evidence showed that Huguely had kicked a hole in her door to confront her about their rocky relationship.
After finding him guilty of second-degree murder and grand larceny, the jury recommended that he be sentenced to 25 years for the murder and one year for the larceny.
Hughuely's defense team was seeking a 14-year sentence. Circuit Judge Edward Hogshire's decision was closer to the jury's recommendation, but he was not bound by the jury's decision
